FAQ

What is occupational therapy?

Pediatric occupational therapy involves helping a child gain or re-gain skills they need for the activities that occupy their daily lives. For kids this includes activities of daily living (eating, toileting, bathing, dressing, etc), academia, and play! Occupational therapists look at the whole person assessing the reason for the challenges and ways to improve those areas either through skill development or adaptation.

At Kaleidoscope Occupational Therapy, we focus on the whole person and even the family unit. We pride ourselves in educating parents/caregivers with the tools, resources, and skills to “treat their own child.”

How do I know if my child needs occupational therapy?

If your child experiences challenges in any of the areas below, we recommend either a FREE 20-minute phone conversation or FREE screening to determine if an evaluation is needed:

  • Dressing, bathing, eating, toileting
  • Clumsy -difficulty balancing, bumping into things, unaware of surroundings
  • Executive Functioning- attention, impulse control, memory, task initiation etc
  • Transitioning from task to task or being flexible with their daily schedules
  • Poor academic performance
  • Social interaction (play well with others, give eye contact, listen to ideas of others)
  • Gross motor movements (big body movements like jumping, skipping, running etc.)
  • Fine motor movements (fastening buttons, opening containers, holding a pencil, handwriting etc.)
  • Sensory Processing (over/under responding to sensory experiences)
  • Emotional regulation
  • Poor Threshold for challenging or perceived as challenging tasks/requests

How frequently, and for how long, will my child be in occupational therapy?

Each child is unique and so is their treatment plan. Typically, we see a child 1x/week. Our goal is to see a child for a year or less. This is dependent on the child’s individual needs and the families’ ability to provide consistent carry-over at home.
